She slid it on the ring finger of her right hand. "Thank you," she said.

He pulled out an amulet that he had made. It was gold, encrusted with rubies and emeralds. It was an Orobruos, a snake that almost makes a circle by biting its tail. It hung from a black silk cord.

"Oh wow," she said in awe.

It swung back and forth, almost hypnotizingly. "I made this..."

"It's beautiful," she said.

"But I don't need it," he muttered. He leaned in, and tied the silk around her neck.

She looked down at it then back at him. "You're giving me this? Why? It looks valuable."

"Like I said, I don't need it. And it fits you, so there," he muttered. He had made it for her.

She looked back up at him. "Thank you," she said.

"Don't mention it," he said, fingering his own medallion.

She hesitated half a second and then leaned in to kiss him gently.

He was surprised, but threaded his fingers through her hair and kissed her back.
